Canadian sentenced in narwhal tusk case

BANGOR - A Canadian man received his sentence today for illegally importing narwhal whale tusks into the U.S.

Gregory Robert Logan, 60, has been ordered to serve 5 years and two months in prison.

Logan was arrested in 2013 after he was caught smuggling more than 250 whale tusks into the U.S. at the Maine border. He planned to distribute them to buyers in America.

Narwhal whales are a threatened species and it's illegal to import the parts without the proper permits.

Authorities agreed to drop some of the charges in the case after Logan agreed to pleaded guilty to charges of money laundering and conspiracy to launder money.
