AUGUSTA (WGME) - Retired Staff Sargeant Travis Mills was in Augusta Tuesday, speaking to long-term caregivers from across the state.

The quadruple amputee was the keynote speaker for the Maine Healthcare Association's "Celebrating Excellence Awards."

 

After listening to Travis's story, the honorees received their awards.

 

Sergeant Mills said he was honored to speak before hard working people who play a vital role in the lives of Maine's elderly and disabled. He stated "They're getting awards for being the best caregivers around the state and without my care giver which is my wife, without support I got at Walter Reid I probably wouldn't be the same person or in the same place i am now."

 

Laura Phillips, life enrichment assistant. said "I love what I do for a job and having Travis here is a great motivation to get through any challenges you have during the day."

 

This year almost two dozen employees from nursing homes and assisted living facilities across the state were honored with the "Award for Excellence."
