MADRID TOWNSHIP (WGME) - A Western Maine couple is charged with cruelty to animals after investigators say they moved out and left their dog behind.

The Franklin County Sheriff's Office is investigating after the owner of a property in Madrid Township found a dog left behind, weeks after a couple moved out.

According to the sheriff's office, the ten year old German Shorthaired Pointer was abandoned and malnourished with the responding deputy reporting he could see every bone in its body.

They said the dog was taken to an animal hospital in Lewiston, but it was so sick it had to be euthanized.

Investigators stated the owners, Christopher Elliott and Crystal Webber, have been summonsed for cruelty to animals.

A neighbor told CBS 13 she used to see the pair walking their dog and knew they moved out, but didn't realize the dog was still in the trailer. She said she didn't hear any barking.

The sheriff's office is still investigating and trying to determine exactly how long the dog had been abandoned.

Investigators said Elliott is currently in the county jail on an unrelated matter. Webber couldn't be reached for comment.
