Senator Collins introduces bill to keep transgender soldiers in U.S. Military

WASHINGTON D.C. - Senator Susan Collins has introduced legislation that will make it more difficult for President Trump to ban transgender people from the military.

She and New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand have introduced an amendment that would make it easier for them to continue to serve. It would prohibit the Defense Department from denying re-enlistment based on a person's gender identity.

It would also require the Defense Secretary to provide Congress with a report on his review of military members who are transgender.

It also sends a message from Congress that people who are qualified and meet military standards should be allowed to serve.
