Deadly Ellsworth accident under investigation Featured

ELLSWORTH - A Southwest Harbor man was killed Monday morning following a single-vehicle crash on Route 3 in Ellsworth.

"This is a rarity, we haven't had a fatal crash in Ellsworth in quite some time." said Ellsworth Police Chief Glenn Moshier.

Monday morning Kevin Dyer, 28 was killed when the car he was driving crashed into this tree on Route 3 near the Ellsworth-Trenton town line.

Dyer was pronounced dead at the scene. He was the only one in the vehicle.

Moshier added "Speed was an obvious cause at this point, but beyond that, the remainder will be determined through our investigation."

It happened just before 4 p.m., past the Marden's on Route 3.

Crews responded before Chief Moshier arrived on scene.

The road was shut down until 7 a.m. while traffic was diverted.

Moshier stated "The vehicle was still up against the tree and we just went to work with reconstructing the scene to try and get some sort of answer as to what caused the crash."

Moshier believes it could be a number of answers. He stated "It's possible there was fatigue involved, potential of animals in the roadway, those are all of things we will look further into.

Dyer's father, also named Kevin, was a former firefighter and EMT in Southwest Harbor and was killed in a plane crash years ago.

Dyer's family was notified of his death Monday morning.
