WHITING - Authorities are investigating a kayaking incident that killed a Machias man.

Allen Devericks, 48 body was recovered this morning on Indian Lake in Whiting.

 

Maine wardens said Devericks was kayaking on the lake with his 22-year-old daughter Brandi when his kayak overturned around 8 p.m. Wednesday.

 

When his daughter went to help him, her vessel also capsized. Both had life jackets, but neither were wearing them.

 

A witness heard their cries for help and overturned his canoe trying to rescue them, he then got another boat and was able to tow Brandi's boat to shore.

 

Unable to stay afloat, Devericks slipped beneath the surface.

 

This is the 13th drowning in Maine this year.
