The Kennebec County Sheriff's Department reports it was called to a home on the Sturtevant Hill Road around 1:30 p.m. They discovered Hugh Costello, 81, had been shot outside the home and was seriously injured.
His wife, Sally Ann, 61, was taken into custody and charged with elevated aggravated assault.
Police are now trying to figure out what led up to the shooting.
"We're taking the time that we need to make sure that we investigate it properly. It's not a homicide, [it's] elevated aggravated assault." said Kennebec County Sheriff Ken Mason.
The sheriff's department said the couple is no stranger to law enforcement. There's a history of domestic disturbances at the home, requiring a police response.
Sheriff Mason added "My agency the sheriff's office, and the state police have been to this residence in the past for various calls for service."
Hugh Costello was rushed to Central Maine Medical Center where his condition remains unknown.
Sally Ann Earl-Costello is in the Kennebec County Jail where she's being held without bail. She'll make her first court appearance on Friday.
The local animal control officer was also called to the home to remove a number of pets.
The firearm believed to have been used in the shooting has also been recovered.
