But environmentalists are among those that packed a public hearing Monday morning, claiming the legislation could lead to an environmental disaster.
The Board of Environmental Protection passed new rules in January that would help regulate the mining industry, but groups like the Natural Resources Council of Maine said they aren't strong enough. They're asking lawmakers to block those weaker rules. They're supporting measures that would help protect local groundwater and other resources.
But those in the mining industry said they can't work here with the current regulations.
