DECH expansion is on schedule

MACHIAS - Progress is being made on the expansion to the Down East Community Hospital, or DECH, thanks in part to the community.

Work is currently being done to expand the Emergency Department. It's all in an effort to improve the care patients receive throughout the Machias area.

The hospital is looking to raise $1.5 million for the project and recently received a $15,000 donation from the Hannaford Charitable Foundation.

As of now, things appear to be on schedule.

"The steel structure is going up and that should be in place in a few weeks. We have a beam signing next week on the 18th at 10:00. Members of the community will be here to sign the beam as it goes in place. Then the structure will be closed off and they'll start working on the inside," says Steve Lail, the executive vice president of DECH.

They hope construction will be done by fall 2018.
