Update: The Maine State Medical Examiner's Office said Dr. Jim Laurita's cause of death was asphyxiation with multiple fractures due to compression of the chest. It was a crushing injury by one of the elephants, exactly how is still being investigated, but the cause of death appears accidental.
HOPE - Officials in Knox County are investigating the death of Dr. James Laurita, the founder of Hope Elephants in Hope, Maine.
Officials say Laurita was routinely tending to the elephants when it appears he fell in to the corral and struck his head on the cement floor. It's unknown at this point why he fell.
An autopsy will be scheduled to determine cause of Laurita's death.
