Millinocket Marathon a great success

MILLINOCKET - It's only been held for the past three years, but already the Millinocket Marathon is gaining a national reputation.

It's been less than a month since this year's race. Yet, more than 1,200 already are registered for the 2018 marathon.

There's no entry fee for this race. It was started as a way to bring people to a town once reeling from the closure of the paper mill that once employed thousands of people.

Now, a marathon in Millinocket in December is providing a much need economic boost.

Katahdin Area Chamber of Commerce president, Jamie Brundrett, said "It's a great shot in the arm. Everybody I've talked to, all the local businesses, chamber members or not, all saw a good spike in business. Everybody's thrilled."

So far, if anything, Brundrett said the colder weather adds to the marathon's positive reputation.
