Healthy Acadia and Washington County Community College Offer Free Healthy Cooking Class Series for Students

Healthy Acadia is thrilled to offer a free six-class “Cooking Matters” series in partnership with Washington County Community College on Tuesdays beginning January 30, 2018 and continuing through March 13. The series is specially designed for those struggling with a tight food budget who are looking for healthier options. Classes will offer participants an opportunity to learn about easy ways to prepare healthy, delicious meals and stretch food dollars.

“Cooking Matters teaches healthy eating habits, cooking skills, food shopping, and budgeting through a fun and hands-on learning experience,” said Sara McConnell, Healthy Acadia’s Washington County Nutrition Education Coordinator. “This class series, offered in partnership with Washington County Community College, features incredible resources that can help make healthy eating simple and fun on any budget.”

In each class, under the guidance of McConnell and Bernadette Farrar from Washington County Community College, participants will work together to create a meal and enjoy sampling their completed dishes. Free take-home ingredients will be provided for participants to recreate the meal at home. A recipe book and other helpful kitchen tools are also provided to participants upon graduation to support cooking at home and more healthful living.

"Nutrition is an important part of a healthy lifestyle for anyone but teaching students - many of which are food insecure - these valuable lessons, is huge. This collaboration is an exceptional opportunity," states Bernadette Farrar, Student Navigator at Washington County Community College.

Classes will meet in the St.Croix Hall kitchen at Washington County Community College on Tuesdays from 11:30am to 1:00pm. Participants are requested to commit to all six classes in the series. Healthy Acadia Nutrition Education Initiative classes are made possible through Maine SNAP-Ed. Maine SNAP-Ed is funded by the USDA's Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, which is administered by the Maine Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and implemented through a contract with the University of New England (UNE).
